The amount of resources shared with us this week is not only informative but certainly a 'life saver'. The ongoing research and ways in which we give credit to information is paramount to the excellence of what it is we do and what it is we share. Though I knew the basics of plagiarism, the specifics given here leave no doubt in the defining of the term itself. When one thinks that the thought that is ultimately placed on paper is 'unigue' and their 'own' the necessity of ongoing research in imperative. Sometimes we learn that there are others who have very similar thought process but also a similarity in the way this information is shared. Check, double check & triple check when you have a sense of wonder in the legality of what is being written.
The idea of committing a 'crime', an 'academic crime' that will follow you forever and be that skeleton in the closet is enough to 'never assume' that what one is doing is correct and right. I find that I can now appreciate the idea of TURNITIN, simply knowing that not all professors either have the time nor take the time to check for plagiarism.
Finishing this week, as stated in prior blog posts, I have additional and incredibly important information to use in the coming weeks, months and years.

I like how you used the phrase "life saver" it's pretty accurate. If we don't follow the rules of plagiarism, we can face many harsh punishments. I have heard of a couple people in the last few years who have gotten caught for integrity issues and got kicked out of class and the school. I feel the punishment fit the crime, but do you? ReplyDeleteFair is fair. Individuals need to take responsibility for their actions. All too often the one who has broken the rule and gets caught tread water as they attempt to find a way to place blame. Yes I absolutely think that getting kicked out of school fits the crime. Be responsible for your actions and take ownership for your wrongs!

ReplyDeleteHi Michele,
ReplyDeleteI like the statement that you made about how we need to check, double check, and triple check to make sure that what is being written is not plagiarism. We have to make sure that we know that an academic crime, is very serious and we don't want to mess up our records. We need to understand that the best thing to do is to just write a paper in our own words, and to the best of our ability.
Hi Desiree - I completely agree with all you've said! I'm wondering if you find the 'avoidance and risk' of plagiarism to be something that is an anxiety inducer when researching for assignments - or has this class guided and taught enough to avoid? Michele
ReplyDeleteMichele,
ReplyDeleteI am so loving how your research has grown! It is an exciting feeling, isn't it :) ? Your post for week 6 hit me when you mentioned that we learn that others may have similar thoughts as us. Ironically that hit me in my research this week! The Newsweek article, one I used as one of my resources, had commentary from another resource I am also using (a study). I have found that I am very much in sync with the thought process the researches have as well. One of the comments a researcher used was explaining how it wouldn't be fair to give a blind individual an IQ test because they of course could not read it. Literally this is the same example I have used for years, in my own words, but it is linked to similar thinking patterns from others. I have always thought, when in doubt cite. I also ABSOULTELY agree that this class should be one of the first classes a student at Brandman University takes. Although I’m a transfer student, it is my first semester and I have learned so much. In reference to your post on my blog, we definitely have to meet, we were meant to!
