Hello all! My name is Michele K. Waite (that's with ONE "L"). I have attended Brandman University since January of 2012 majoring in Social Science with three key areas of study which include: Sociology, Psychology & Criminal Justice. My intent, when I complete my Bachelors in the Spring of 2013, is to continue on and complete my Master's Program. Upon completion of this I will give back to my community and volunteer my services.
Currently and in the past, my career path has always included working or volunteering for non-profit organizations. Further research in the area of LGBTQ (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Questioning) teenagers who are in need of Foster Care is the area that most interests me. I know that I am lacking in the area of both fluency and literacy in research in 2012. I would like to learn how to properly access library databases and also learning to better cite sources.

Hi Michele (with 1 L) :)
ReplyDeleteI have read a couple blog posts and I relate to yours the most. I too would like to pursue my masters when I am finished with my BA at Brandman. You really drew me in when you said you wanted to work with foster youth. I believe my topic relates to your in a way because I too would like to work with foster youth. My main focus in my career is "Rehabilitaion" and that starts with the youth and the majority of the time its foster youth.
The topic you chose to research is an a more wide spread and open than it use to be. (LGBTQ Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Questioning) It says your focus is the youth in this category and please correct me if I am wrong. This is a great place to start because the suicide rate in LGBT teens is higher than it is in the genral population. Bullying of LGBT youth has been shown to be a contributing factor in many suicides. The Suicide Prevention Resource Center synthesized these studies and estimated that between 30 and 40% of LGBT youth, depending on age and sex groups, have attempted suicide. President Obama supports equal rights and recently backed gay marriage in 3 states Maine, Washington, and Maryland.
I believe you can help make a change Michele and I support you!
here is my blog if you would like to take a glance at it :)

I appreciate your comments and support as well as the similarities we have. I wish I could address you by name but you haven't signed. :( I also attempted to bring up your blog according to the URL you left without success. Hmmm . . . ?

Hello Michele,
ReplyDeleteI am glad that we are in another class together, although on campus would be best as I will miss your classroom interactions. I remember our talk about future goals that we have when we were sitting in the computer class. We talked about the causes that you want to fight for and your selflessness is an inspiration. I have always had an intent to give back to the community and your commitment to a greater cause than yourself has shown me that education is the key. I have received much support throughout my youth from the community and I would like to give back and repay my debt. I can't wait to have further discussions.

Hi there Patrick,
DeleteI, too, am pleased to have another class with you. I find you to be an articulate, ambitious and ernest young man. When I meet young people like yourself, I am always hopeful that in the coming years in which I am an old lady, you are a part of the generation that will speak for me. You are so correct in wondering if you want to 'work you life away'. Remember this, when what you are doing is enjoyed - you will never work another day in your life!
Michele
ahhhhh Michele my name is Clarista! and here is my blog :)

Michele,
ReplyDeleteI replied to your comment on my blog-thank you :) I love your blog background-very fun, warm, and inviting colors! I have an appreciation for your aspirations and commitment to work for your community and as you put it, "give back." I believe having this positive attitude at work will make you successful in any non-profit organization you choose to be a part of. I related to your outlook of giving back because currently I volunteer my time for the EFMP (Exceptional Family Member Program) at Beale AFB. It is the special needs division on base that helps assist special needs families, and also provides a social outlet for them as well. I look forward to your future post, and learning more about LGBTQ.
Best,
Kris
Hi Kris,
DeleteThank you for your compliments. Volunteer work warms the 'center' of who I am. The military appears to have some dynamic programs for their families. I think this is wonderful for all involved and for you to have and respond to this experience and need in your community. Special needs is such a broad area. I'd love to hear more about what you are involved with.
Thank you!
